EMV FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is an EMV chip card?
Often referred to as smart cards or EMV cards, a chip card is a standard sized credit/debit card that contains a small computer chip embedded in the plastic as well as the magnetic strip on the back.  This microchip provides an enhanced layer of security to your transactions.

Are EMV cards more secure?
The embedded microchip provides unique data specific to your card and the transaction being processed.  These security features make chip cards extremely difficult to counterfeit.

When will I receive my new EMV card?
Over the next few weeks, First State Bank will be issuing chip cards to our current consumer and business debit cardholders.

Will I have the same PIN number and card number?
Yes.  Your card and PIN number will stay the same; however, the expiration date and security code on the back of the card will be different.  Keep in mind that if you have any automatic/monthly payments with your debit card, you may need to contact those merchants and give them the updated expiration date and security code.

How do I perform chip transactions?
Step 1:  Insert your chip card into the ATM or point-of-sale terminal, following the instructions on the terminal.  It is important
to leave the card in the terminal until your transaction is complete.  If you remove your card too soon, the transaction will end
and your purchase will not be processed.
Step 2:  The ATM will require that you enter your PIN.  The point-of-sale terminal may require you to input your PIN or sign
your sales receipt to complete your purchase.
Step 3:  For sales transactions, the terminal will display your purchase amount.
Step 4:  When your transaction is complete, it is important to remember to remove your card.
If the point-of-sale terminal is not chip-enabled, you will use the card the traditional way and swipe.
